What's on: This Bank holiday Weekend

The first of the May bank holidays arrives this weekend, and there are a few things going on you may want to get involved with...

All weekend:

Friday 1st-Sunday 4th May: Luna Flix Outdoor Cinema @ Stanwick Lakes, open 7.30pm
Approximately 30 minutes out from Milton Keynes, the open cinema at Stanwick lakes will be showing 3 different films over the weekend. Friday's showing is: 'Close encounters of the third kind', Saturday 'Moulin Rouge' and Sunday is 'Mamma Mia'. The outdoor screen is over 7 metres wide, and it's a great location to enjoy an outdoor film experience with friends and family. Bring a picnic and don't forget warm clothes and a blanket or picnic chair to sit on. The doors open at 7.30pm for picnics, and the film will start at around 9.15pm, according to dusk light. Tickets cost £9 for adults and £6.50 for children, pre-booking is essential, click here to book tickets.

Saturday 2nd- Monday 4th May: Rushden Cavalcade @ Bedford Road, NN10 0SN, 10am-5pm
The 37th Cavalcade of historical transport and country show; 'The big rally that starts the season'. Bringing over 1000 different exhibits from all over the country, attracting over 25,000 visitors each year, there's something for everyone to see and do, from tractor engines and vintage vehicles, to funfair rides and trade stands. Entry costs £8 for adults, £5 for children and senior citizens. Family ticket of 2 adults and 2 children cost £22. Free parking available.

Saturday 2nd-Monday 4th May: The Crooked Billet Festival @ Newton Longville, every day from 12 midday-10.30pm.
The Crooked Billet in Newton Longville are holding their first festival over the bank holiday period, and are hoping to make it a regular feature for years to come. Doors open at 12pm each day, and there will be 2 large marquees so the fun will be happening no matter what the weather. Saturday there will be face painting from 2-6pm, there will be music from cover band 'Inside job' at 2 and 4pm, and from 7pm will be video horse raising in aid of Willen Hospice. Sunday from 2-3.3pm will be John the jazz pianist performing live, and local musician Luke Ford will be performing at both 4.30pm and 5.45pm. There will be a whole evening of comedy entertainment from 7pm, ending at 10.30pm. Hog roast will be available Saturday and Sunday from 3pm, and BBQ will be available all day. Monday will be more relaxed, with background music, BBQ and plenty of ale.

Friday 1st May:

The Bedford branch of the Royal Anglian Regiment association @ The Keep, Bedford, 8pm
Monthly meeting, on the first Friday of the month. Bar opens at 7.30pm, meeting begins at 8pm. Open to any ex servicemen/women of any arm.

Cupcake Decorating @ Frosts Garden Centre, Woburn Sands, 10am and 1pm
Enjoy a cupcake decorating masterclass with a professional tutor to guide you through piping swirls and hand crafting sugar paste decorations, as well as how to master the iconic butter cream swirl. At the end of the day you'll go home with 6 of your own beautifully decorated cupcakes. The workshop runs for 2 hours and costs £40, pre-booking is a must. Bedford art society @ Putnoe Heights Church, 7.15pm for 7.30pm start
Hashim Akib demonstrates the use of acrylics. Learn some new ideas, techniques and approaches to painting with acrylics. Entry is free for members, £5 for visitors.

Saturday 2nd May:

May Day Festival @ Campbell Park, 12-5pm.
The Parks trust annual fair. Dance around the Maypole and celebrate May Day. Free fun for all the family including Morris dancing, folk music, children's entertainment, stalls and children's rides.

Sunday 3rd May:

Dawn Chorus @ Hanson environmental study centre, Linford lakes, 4.30-6.30am
Join the expert ranger for National dawn chorus day, and discover the early morning bird call. Costs £2 per person. Meet at Hanson environmental study centre, Linford lakes, MK14 5AH.

Parks and fun run @ Willen lake north, 10am
Free fun runs for all ages and abilities, with a choice of routes from 2km to 10km. Starting from Willen lake North car park.

Open Mic Night @ The Two Brewers Olney, 8.30pm
A great night of music, and enjoying a great selection of drinks.

That Time Of The Month comedy club @ The Cannon, Newport Pagnell, 7pm

Monday 4th May:

MK Marathon and half marathon @ Stadium MK, 10am
For runners and spectators alike, it's set to be a great day. With 4,500 acres of woodlands, lakesides, parks and landscaped areas within Milton Keynes, it's the ideal venue for a Green City marathon.

Hollington Wood Annual Bluebell Day @ Hollington Wood, 10am-6pm

Milton Keynes through the lens @ The Parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Olney, 7-9pm
Milton Keynes through the lens, presented by Living Archive MK in connection with Independent Cinema MK, shows a collection of documentary films made over the last 70 years, as well as a short Olney heritage film. The films will be introduced by Roger Kitchen and will last approximately 2 hours. Tickets cost £4.

Springtime creation is an annual event which presents some of the best in the world of arts and crafts. Spring Sale @ St. Margaret's Church, Denton, 11am-3pm
There will be a wide selection of previously loved items such as books, toys, games, dvds, cakes, cards, potted plants and more. There will be a raffle, and refreshments will also be available, with homemade soup and fresh bread.

50/50 auction @ Yardley Hastings Memorial Hall, 2pm
Goods will be accepted from 8.30am-1pm and viewing will be from 1-2pm. Proceeds will go to village funds.

Clothes swap evening @ Lavendon Village Hall, 7pm
Ladies and children's clothes swap evening. Come along for a fun evening, and enjoy a pudding and first glass of wine included in the ticket price. Tickets cost £10.

Museum spring quiz @ The Olney Centre, 7.30-10pm
The Cowper and Newton museum hold a quiz evening with buffet. Hosted by the regular quiz-masters, Neil and Pat Hodges. Buffet will be provided but please bring your own drink and a glass. There will also be a raffle.

Meet Alan Titchmarsh @ Frosts Garden Centre, 11am-4pm
Famous garden writer and television presenter, Alan Titchmarsh, will be at Frosts garden centre this weekend, in celebration of National gardening week. He will be doing gardening talks, a book signing and a meet and greet for fans. There will be two 40 minute talks which cost £5 to attend, one at 11am and the other at 3pm.  The 11am talk will be entitled 'Gardening for wildlife', and the 3pm talk will be entitled 'Small garden secrets'. Each will be followed by a Q&A session. All money raised from the tickets will go to the local charity, Supershoes, which aims to bring hope and a smile to seriously ill and disabled children.


Home composting workshop @ The Hanson Centre, Wolverton Road, Great Linford, 10am-12pm and 2-4pm.
If you're new to home composting or want to learn more about it, come along to the free workshop this weekend and find out more about disposing of fruit and vegetable waste. This is a free event, booking is essential and you can book by clicking here.

1940's Boutique @ Bletchley Park, 9.30am
Enjoy a day of 1940's glamour, and learn to style your own hair and makeup to achieve that iconic 1940's look. Create a fresh and versatile spring-time do. You will learn how to create some iconic styles, such as the famous victory rolls, and makeup to match. The day includes demonstrations, practical sessions, food and refreshments and time to enjoy Bletchley Park. Sing-along Frozen @ MK Theatre, 11am, 3pm and 6.30pm

If you love the movie Frozen, it's a great opportunity to join in the experience at MK Theatre this weekend. Come dressed as your favourite Frozen character, and sing along with the lyrics on screen. There will be a live host who will show you how to use your interactive fun pack and judge the fancy dress competition. Tickets are available here.

Orienteering @ Shenley Wood, Milton Keynes, 10am-1pm

Learn how to use a map while having fun out in the parks. Run by South Midlands Orienteering club. Open to beginners, more experienced orienteers and runners alike. No need to pre-register, just turn up on the day. There are a selection of courses available to suit all needs, from a 2.5k amble to a 7k run. A great opportunity to try something different and enjoy the outdoors at the same time. Parking is available in the public car park on Merlewood Drive, Tattenhoe Street. Entry costs £5. 

Bletchley Park Presents: Victor Madeira @ Bletchley Park, 2-3pm

Victor Madeira talks about his book: 'Britannia and the Bear- The Anglo-Russion intelligence wars, 1917-1929.' Victor is a lecturer in National security and intelligence studies at the University of Buckingham, and has 15 years experience in international security affairs. The talk will be followed by a question and answer session, and then tea and cake will be served, followed by a book signing. Guests can explore Bletchley Park's exhibitions from 9.30am. Tickets cost £25, or £20 for season ticket holders.

Juliette Orton creates beautiful pictures using many different materials. She shows how they are made and where her inspiration comes from. Those keen to try can also have a go themselves. Entry is free for members, or £5 for visitors.

Easter Experiences @ Experience the country, Newton Longville, MK17 0BU
This is the second day of the Easter experiences, where you can take part in a 1 hour activity and off-road thrills ride for £25. Suitable for adults and those aged 12 and up. Add another activity for just £10, including archery, axe- throwing, air rifles and segways. Also available are young person's driving experiences in a Land Defender of £25. Jahnaiah Fundraising Dinner Dance @ Hilton Hotel, Kents Hill Park, 6.30pm-1am

Fundraising dinner dance in aid of orphans affected by Ebola in Sierra Leone. The money raised will support an existing orphanage in Sierra Leone which is already looking after children whose parents have died during the Ebola crisis, and also to help bring light to the lack of medical equipment and diagnostic materials available in Sierra Leone during this time. Tickets cost £50, and includes a three-course meal, entertainment and much more. Auction and raffle also available. Dress code is black tie/traditional. No 38 Vintage Emporium Event @ High Street Newport Pagnell, 9am-5pm

The No 38 Vintage Emporium on the High Street in Newport Pagnell is celebrating being open for six months. There will be special events all day, including live music, free ice creams from the Shake 'n' Scoop ice cream shack, and a photo booth taking old fashioned style photos.

The Pad Presents: Marika Hackman @ Bedford Esquires, 7.30pm

Enjoy some Easter activities at the end of the Easter holidays. Nathan Grisdale comes to Milton Keynes as part of his UK tour. Suitable for ages 14 and over, under 14s allowed when accompanied by an adult. Paul Carrack @ MK Theatre, starts at 7.30pm

Beer Festival- Easter weekend

You don't have to wait for summer for this Beer Festival! The Club at Hanslope are holding a Beer Festival from Friday 3rd April until Sunday 5th, open from noon-11pm every day. There will be a number of Real Ales and Ciders from local breweries, with live music every day, quizzes, games and competitions for all the family.

On Friday there will also be 'The Wheel of Fortune', and on Saturday there'll be a quiz to see how well you know your beers, with great prizes to be won. The Clermont vs Northampoton rugby kicks off at 5.40pm, and there will be live music with The Jazz Collective from 8pm.

Easter Sunday (5th) includes a great variety of Easter-themed events. There will be a giant Easter egg raffle and drawing and colouring competitions for children, with chocolate egg prizes. From 5pm there will be live music with Chaos Theory, and at 7pm the festival will close with a quiz night.

All are welcome, and admission is free, sky and BT Sports available every day. Don't miss out on a great event this Easter weekend, in just over a week's time.

This Weekend's Events

Friday 20th March:

The Pad Presents: Ian McCulloch (Echo & The Bunnymen) + Guests @ Bedford Corn Exchange, starts at 7.30pm. Echo & the Bunnymen were formed in Liverpool in 1978 and became one of the UK's most important bands. They have had numerous hit singles along the way, including Seven Seas, Never Stop The Killing Moon and Lips Like Sugar. Front man Ian McCulloch will also be performing solo, in a fully acoustic show with stripped down versions of their songs. A one-off experience. Tickets cost £18.50.

Quiz Night @ Olney Rugby Club, starts at 7.30pm.

Saturday 21st March: 

Easter Coffee Morning @ Westbury Grange, Newport Pagnell, from 10am-12 noon.
Come and join the fundraising coffee morning, raising money for outings and treats for the residents of Westbury Grange. All are welcome to come along, there will be a selection of stalls, raffle and a wide selection of cakes and coffee.

Race Night @ Lavendon Village Hall, first race is at 7.30pm.

Olney Ward Councillor Surgery @ The Institute, Emberton from 12.30pm-1.30pm.

Newport Pagnell Singers: Great Choral Masterpieces @ Newport Pagnell Parish Church, from 7.30pm. Including excerpts from the following works: Gloria- Vivalidi, Messiah- Handel, Requiem- Mozart, Elijah- Mendelssohn and Requiem- Jenkins. An evening for all those who appreciate fine choral music- don't miss out. Tickets cost £10 in advance or £12 on the door.

ArtFULL Monthly Show @ The Centre:MK, Sidbury Arcade between doors 13 and 15, all day.
This is a free event, and the first of ARTfull's monthly shows in the centre:mk is 'Over the Top'. Featuring the limited edition bronze sculptures of Tim Cotterill, the Frogman and a special custom made Over the Top frog, there will be art to see, artists to talk to and more, including a free raffle.

MK Dons vs Notts County, and family fun day @ Stadium MK, from 12 noon.
Another chance to enjoy a family fun day at the Dons, with a selection of activities taking place around the ground from midday, and discounted ticket prices for all the family. Adult tickets start at £10, and under 18s go for just £1. For an extensive list of stalls and activities, click here.

Bark in the Park @ Furzton Lake, from 10am.
Bring your four-legged friends to meet other dogs and discover a new dog-walking route. Pre-registration is essential, costs £1 per dog. Walks are not suitable for dogs under 1 year old.

Sunday 22nd March: 

Museum Lunch @ Donzella restaurant, Stanley Court Olney, 12.15-3pm.

Open to friends, volunteers and partners of the museum. An opportunity to mix socially and contribute to raising funds for the museum. Cost is £15 for a two-course lunch. Email friends@cowperandnewtonmuseum.org.uk to reserve a place.

Orienteering @ Linford Wood, starting from 10am-12 noon.

The first of informal orienteering events which will run throughout 2015 for beginners, more experienced orienteers and runners. No special equipment is needed and no need to pre-register, just turn up! There are a number of different courses to choose from, in varying levels of difficulty and length. Creative Space @ The Stables, Wavendon, MK17 8LU, from 11.45am-1pm and 2.45pm-4pm.

Interactive music events for disabled children and their families. Come and make music, crafts and dance with the charity, 'Create'. The 75 minute event is unique, fun and interactive. Friday: 

Comic Relief:
Whatever you're up to this Friday, you're bound to come across Red Nose Day in one way or another. The idea of making your 'face funny for money' is interpreted in a number of ways across the country. If you have children at school or work in a school you'll probably be wearing your red noses and raising money for comic relief there in one way or another, from bake sales and wearing red clothes, to danceathons, swimathons and quiz's. If you're not getting involved during the day, there's always the 6-hour marathon TV show on Friday night from 7pm. An evening of entertainment aiming to make you laugh out loud with a selection of stars, including the return of the classic shows; Little Britain, Mr Bean, and Vicar of Dibley among others. As well as the humorous, comedy elements, will be the more serious films and footage which show Comic Relief's charity work and where the money raised will be going to.

Locally, there are activities going on for comic relief in schools and other locations, one of these is in Stantonbury, with various activities taking place from 3.30-6.30pm. There will be face painting, with a professional makeup artist. You can be entered into the competition to win Best Funny Face by simply donating to Comic Relief, having your face painted and photo taken. There's also a bouncy castle, so you can make those funny faces while you bounce! From 7-9pm there'll be a table tennis tournament for Comic Relief, so you can pop on your nose and enter the mini tournament, both juniors and adults are welcome. The Commonwealth medal winner and current reigning world Ping Pong champion, Andrew Baggaley will be awarding the trophies. You can watch from Buskers cafe & bar.

Saturday:

80's night held by Domesticats, at Lavendon Village Hall. 7.30-11.30pm, Fancy dress is optional, but would be fun! Tickets cost £10 and the money raised will go towards Lavendon Village Hall. Come along for a great night of the 80's!

The Edelweiss Pirates at Stantonbury Theatre, 3.30 and 7.30pm. A show featuring the Edelweiss Pirates of Cologne, a group of teenagers in Germany during the Second Wolrd War who realise they must start showing their resistance to the Nazis. Suitable for ages 13 and over. Tickets cost £14, concessions £11.

Tennis Works at Stony Stratford Tennis Club (MK11 1AR) is holding a free indoor mini tennis session this Saturday. A great introduction to tennis, with fun and games. 4-6 year olds are welcome from 1-2pm, and 7-10 year olds from 2-3pm. For more information email Stony@tennisworks.net.

Milton keynes Gin Festival at the Buszy (MK9 1LR) All afternoon and evening, 2 sessions from 12-5pm and 6-11pm.
Over 60 different gins will be showcased, and visitors will receive a brochure with information on all the gins available to try. You will need drinks tokens to purchase drinks, available at the front desk. The cost is £4 per drink, including tonic and a fresh garnish. There will be live entertainment, talks from gin industry experts and food available to buy all evening, as well as the chance to get chatting with other gin lovers! International Women's Day concert at The venue, Walton high, Milton Keynes. 7.30pm.
Sian Edwards will be conducting a very special concert performed on National Women's Day and designed to recognise the high talent of women involved in classical music. Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs at Stantonbury Theatre, 2.30pm.

The 'Cheese bus' will be in Milton Keynes all day on Saturday. Anchor have started a campaign called 'save our sandwich' which is attempting to convince people how good a cheese sandwich can be, rather than the more fancy lunchtime alternatives of today. The Anchor cheese bus will be driving around Milton Keynes from 8am-6pm all day this Saturday, and when you pledge to help save the cheese sandwich you'll get a free sandwich, and be in with the chance of winning some cheese-related prizes.

Sunday 8th March:

Milton Keynes Festival of Running at Xscape, Milton Keynes from 9.30am-6pm.
The Milton Keynes Half Marathon and Festival of Running take place this Sunday. The races start on the central dual-carriageways of Milton Keynes, then through some beautiful scenery. HULA Animal Rescue 'Mum's the Word' 1pm-3.30pm.

Fossil Hunting for adults @ Stonepit Field, MK. 10am.
Fossil hunting doesn't have to just be for the kids, and this weekend the adults can give it a try, at Stonepit Field. Come fossil hunting and learn more about the geology of Stonepit Field. Ceilidh with Ock 'n' Dough @ Lavendon Village Hall, 7pm.

Art, Photography and Craft Exhibition and Sale @ The Chellington Centre. Saturday and Sunday, 10am-4pm. 
All artists, craftspeople, photographers, sculptors and woodworkers are invited to submit their work for exhibition or sale on Saturday or Sunday. This is a fundraising event to support both the running of Chellington and the bursary fund, which all groups with needs can apply for.

Handmade and Vintage weekend extravaganza @ Middleton Hall, Centre:MK Saturday 9am-7pm, Sunday 10.30am-5pm.
A free event with 128 stalls full of authentic handmade and vintage items. High standards and great prices, great for gifts and things you just won't find in the shops. From fashion to food, art to interior design, there's a great range of items to interest you.

This is a free fun run for all ages and abilities, with a choice of routes from 2km to 10km. A great activity to get all the family out and about! The run starts at Campbell Park Pavilion car park, with a choice of 3k, 5k and 10k routes. (Routes may vary depending on weather conditions) 

St David's Day @ MK Rose, Campbell Park, 3pm.

An event to remember the patron Saint of Wales, involving songs and poetry, mainly in Welsh. This is a free service, all are welcome, come along and bring a daffodil or a leek! The ceremony will take place at MK Rose which is situated at the top of Campbell Park. The nearest parking is at centre:mk (John Lewis end).

Crossharbour Charity Fundraising Concert @ All Saints Church, Bow Brickhill, 3pm.

Charity fundraiser for Willen Hospice and ASTRA community charity. A dynamic new band from London's traditional Irish music scene. Refreshments will be provided and open session for all will follow. Tickets cost £8 per person, email sarah_malleson@hotmail.com.

Twas the last weekend before Christmas...

Christmas is looming, and with the last weekend before the big day what are you going to do with it?!

Hopefully you've managed to get most of the Christmas shopping done already, if not, this weekend may be your chance. Prepare yourself for the crowds in advance and get your trainers on. Not one for the faint hearted, but if there are gifts to buy, it has to be done! Maybe the gifts are bought but you've left the turkey to the last minute, and a bit like the old TV show 'supermarket sweep' you'll likely be racing around the various supermarkets searching for that roastable bird. If you've seen the movie, 'Christmas with the Kranks' you'll understand!

Friday 19th:

'Just another star', the U3A Christmas Concert @ the URC Church, Newport Pagnell, from 7.30pm
Come and enjoy a Christmas concert and readings with the MKU3A choir. Seasonal refreshments will be served and there will also be a raffle. Open air nativity @ Newport Pagnell High Street, 10.50am
This morning come and join in with the annual open-air nativity service with the local churches, starting outside the Parish church with Mary and Joseph and a real life donkey, followed by a drama and  finishing outside Boots at around 11am for some carols, where you can enjoy a hot drink at the Dolphin pub to finish it off.

Rock n Roll Christmas Hop with Tartan Ted @ Newport Pagnell Football Club, from 8pm

The Pad Presents @ Bedford Corn Exchange, St Paul's Square, Bedford, MK40 1SL, 7pm 

Animals + Friends ft. special guest 'Stax legend' Steve Cropper + Cherry Lee Mewis. Animals + Friends were one of the most improtant British bands of the 1960s, with American and British chart topper 'House of the Rising Sun' among others. Guitarist Steve Cropper was voted among the top 100 guitar players of all-time by Rolling Stone Magazine readers in 2003, and so the combination of the two sets the scene for a great night.

Macmillan Coffee morning, run by Jane Smith financial planning. Come along between 9.30am and 12.30pm to 7 Osier Way, Olney for cake, coffee, entertainment and shopping from a range of local shops and businesses.

Ampthill Fireworks- Possibly one of the last local fireworks events of the year, the Ampthill display features a pre-show of live acts, fairground and various food outlets, with the lighting of the Ampthill beacon at 7.30m and fireworks starting at 8pm.

'The Pad Presents' Heaven 17 and Blancmange at Bedford Corn Exchange. Kicking off at 7.30pm, it's a show featuring two of the UK's most original experimental synthesiser bands. Tickets cost £22.50.

Olney Senior Citizens Club run every Friday, this week it's a night of whist.

Bedford Art Society- featuring John Somerscales. 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start. John Somerscales has been involved in the visual arts his entire working life. He has staged exhibitions, exhibited at the Mall gallery in London and has published articles in Paint and The Artist magazines. He will be at the art society in order to talk about composition, and demonstrate watercolour landscape painting. Entry is free for members, £5 for visitors.

The Bedford branch of the Royal Anglian Regiment Association meets on the first Friday of the month at The Keep, Bedford Road, Kempston. The bar opens at 7.30pm and meetings begin at 8pm. Ex Servicemen/women from any arm are invited to join.

Coffee morning and bric-a-brac table top sale at Olney United Reformed Church. From 10am-1pm.

Cliff Richard tribute pub night, at Westbury Grange, Newport Pagnell. Come along from 7.30pm to enjoy an excellent evening's entertainment at a modest cost (only £6) As well as the tribute act there will be a raffle and nibbles, and the bar will be open for drinks.

HULA animal rescue- Winter warmer at Glebe farm, Aspley Guise. Recycle the Vintage

This Saturday, Throwback vintage presents their vintage and retro fair at York House, Stony Stratford. Come along and delve into a selection of vintage and retro items and enjoy musical entertainment- rocking rhythm and blues from Lucille. Open from 9.30am-4.30pm, entry is £1 and children under 12 go free.

Tea party vintage-style 

The Milton Keynes and Bedford group are holding a vintage tea party this Saturday in order to raise awareness for Crohns and Colitis UK. Held at the Summerlin Centre, Woburn Sands. Come along for tea, sandwiches and delicious cakes, served in lovely vintage bone china cups in surroundings decked out 1940's/50's style. Kaley Herrick of Vintage Vanity events will be there to entertain, alongside her lovely waiting staff. Dressing up vintage style is optional, but encouraged! Come along to the centre:mk this weekend to see some of the latest trends to be hitting the stores this autumn/winter. On top of that is the opportunity to win £500 off your autumn wardrobe, don't miss out this weekend!

Campbell Park Pavilion are hosting an opportunity to learn how to make cider and press your own apples to turn it into delicious cider or apple juice! This is a ticketed event which must be booked in advance and costs £15 for the day, which runs from 10am-4pm.

Edwardian Village Fete and rock 'n' roll- Saturday events

Tomorrow there's an opportunity to travel back in time to the Edwardian era at the Memorial hall, Northampton Road in Yardley Hastings. The Edwardian themed fete and produce show features the star attraction of the 'Picture Postcard Tent', where you can have your very own themed portrait taken by photographer Jo Blackwell. The annual show will feature all the usual attractions, including horticulture and handicrafts, music, traditional games, village stalls, competitions, flower festival, memorabilia, and of course a great selection of foods and drinks.

If that doesn't float your boat, then why not head on over to the Newport Pagnell football club where  "rock 'n' roll hop with Tartan Ted" will be on from 7.30pm till late. £5 admission on the door with proceeds going to the Newport Pagnell Christmas Lights.

Then of course, as you should have seen in the blog earlier today, there's the Big Olney Food Festival taking place all weekend in Olney, there's loads to do so have a great weekend!

Luther Vandross tribute tomorrow night

Live and direct from the USA, Luther Vandross and the legends of soul, featuring Dave Lee Andrews, comes to Milton Keynes this Saturday, (16th August) at the Stantonbury Arts and Leisure centre. With classic hits from the likes of Alexander O'Neil, Lionel Richie and George Benson and supporting DJ who will provide dance tunes from the last 5 decades, it's sure to be a great night.

The event kicks off at 7.30pm and goes on into the night until midnight. If you fancy a dance, love soul music or are just interested in having a look, come along to the event tomorrow night. Tickets cost £10, and if you haven't already, you can book online here.

A weekend of outdoor films in Milton Keyens

There are two evenings of outdoor film entertainment coming up this weekend. There's the drive-in cinema tomorrow night at Campbell Park events plateau, and then on Sunday there's the free open air film festival all day at the Campbell Park amphitheatre. A great way to spend a summer afternoon or evening, this festival is one not to be missed.

Drive in cinema- Saturday 16th August, gates open 6pm, performance starts 7pm.
The drive-in movie this year will be the classic shark film; Jaws. Watch the film from the comfort of your car, tickets are £15 per car which permits up to 5 people. If you haven't already, you can book online by clicking here.

FREE Open-air film festival- Sunday 17th August 10am-11pm.
A free event for all the family, there'll be a number of films showing throughout the day on the big screen, held in the amphitheatre. The first film is Toy Story 2 at 1pm, followed by Hook at 3pm and finally Top Gun at 6pm. These are suitable for all ages so it's a great family day out. Bring picnics, popcorn and blankets and enjoy the films in the great outdoors!

British Beer Festival 2014 @ The Cowpers Oak

This weekend, make sure you get along to The Cowpers Oak in Weston Underwood for the third year of the British Beer and Cider Festival. Last year saw over 500 guests attend over the weekend, and this year is set to be bigger and better than ever before. There will be a great selection of local beers and ciders (more variety than ever before!) great hot food, including roast lamb, the famous Pieminister pies served with peas, mash and gravy on Saturday between 1 and 8pm, and burgers and chips served throughout the weekend. Enjoy these food and drink delights in the beer garden, and enjoy some live music from local talent, including a Saturday afternoon jam session led by local musician Ian Roberts, where all budding musicians are invited to come along and play their own songs. A fantastic local party band, 'My Holiday Romance' will draw the evening to a close with some great tunes.

Sunday is the family day of the weekend, with bouncy castles, kids entertainers, glitter tattoos and more.  The event has a great family feel to it and is a great weekend of supporting local people, with local bands and local beers being key to the event.

This Weekend: Events in the local area

You'll have hopefully already seen the blogs for the Newport Pagnell Carnival,the Rugby 7s and the Olney raft and duck race taking place this weekend, but there are a couple more to mention, as well as reminding you of those three key events for the calendar!

SATURDAY:
Lathbury Village Hut is home to an event this weekend; the Lathbury 1914 project exhibition between 2pm and 5pm both Saturday and Sunday. The exhibition entry is free and showcases variety of historical treasures. There will also be extra entertainment going on between 3 and 4pm, including music, poetry readings and the modern day Clanger Competition. There will also be a special service of commemoration in Lathbury Church at 11am on Sunday.

Night Hike @ Ouse Valley park; Something a little different for a Saturday night! The walk begins at 9pm, and led by local wildlife experts you will discover many varieties of nocturnal wildlife residing in the Ouse Valley. Booking is required, and costs just £1 per person.

SUNDAY:
Summer Celebration and Open day @ Campbell Park, Milton Keynes. 1-4pm
An afternoon of guided walks, country talks, music, demonstrations and displays. The Parks Trust will have a display of landscape machinery, talks, demonstrations form some parkland activities, bug hunting for kids with the education team, free land train rides and music from Bradwell silver band. This is a free event. Check the website for the marquee programme of talks and activities.

'Something different' @ St. Laud's church in Sherington, 10.30am
Come along for refreshments and to meet new people and spend some time discovering who this God fellow is. Wherever you stand on faith, all are welcome. There's an informal service to explore Christian faith together.

Tyringham Teas @ St. Peter's Tyringham Churchyard, 3pm
Come along for teas in the St. Peter's Churchyard. Relax with delicious homemade cakes and lovely views over the Ouse.

Newport Pagnell Carnival- This Weekend!

It's that time of year again, the famous Newport Pagnell Carnival is back for two days, and it's set to be bigger and better than ever! This year's theme is 'Go wild at Carnival' which you can interpret as you wish, but I'm envisioning tigers and bears...

Over 40 floats will be hitting the high street on the Saturday of the carnival this year as part of the grand parade, with a variety of local groups and charities showcasing their work and many in fancy dress. One of the highlights of the Carnival, the variety of decorated floats is always entertaining and interesting, many of them are highly inventive and it's great to see what people are able to create! The parade kicks off at 12 midday and tends to last a couple of hours, giving you the rest of the day to enjoy the other elements of the Carnival. All money raised will be going to a great selection of local groups and charities, so it's a very worthwhile cause.
